Internationally renowned artists and landscape architects were invited to present ideas to alter the 13 various districts of the city. The focus was placed on areas on the margins of the city centre as well as "problem zones" in parks and other public green spaces.
This exhibition is presented by the Sprengel Museum Hannover and the City of Hannover’s Department for Environmental Issues and Urban Greenery
The City of Hannover’s Department for Environmental Issues and Urban Greenery, in co-operation with the Sprengel Museum Hannover, initiated a unique project entitled "ArtGardenArt". As part of a municipal programme in 2001, "Hanover-City of Gardens" (which was also part of the urban development initiative "Future Hanover"), internationally renowned artists and landscape architects were invited to present ideas to alter the 13 various districts of the city. The focus was placed on areas on the margins of the city centre as well as "problem zones" in parks and other public green spaces.
The following artists were involved: Maria Eichhorn, Peter Friedl, Olaf Metzel, Olaf Nicolai, Karin Sander and Albert Weis, as well as landscape architects Henri Bava, Paolo Bürgi, Bonita Bulaitis, Monika Gora, Helene Hoelzl/B+B Amsterdam, Gabriele Kiefer and Stephan Tischer. Their ideas, designs and models for this project will be displayed at the Sprengel Museum Hannover from March 23- May 4, 2003.
"ArtGardenArt" is significant in its direct comparison of disciplines, bringing artistic and landscape architectural impulses into the same framework while providing clear contrasts. The problems with which one is confronted in these spaces are similar; hence, it is not surprising that the approaches taken are also similar. These designs present rather diverse solutions, all contributing to an exciting mode of bringing fine art and landscape architecture together.
A catalogue will be presented by snoek publishers (24.80 euro) in which each contribution to the show will be documented in detail.
The press conference for this exhibition will be held on March 21, 2003 at 11 am at the Sprengel Museum Hannover.
The opening will take place on March 23 at 11.15 am at the museum.
Hanover- City of Gardens
Hanover's reputation as a "green city" has an extensive tradition. It is therefore not by chance that this exhibition, with its roots in the EXPO project "Urban Gardens", will take place in a city like Hanover.
The urban development project, "Future Hanover" 2001-2005, has incorporated this special quality by setting a new focus on ‘Hanover – Garden City’ and by examining ways with which various urban areas can be given a new lease of life. The "Hanover- Garden City" project consists of a number of thematic endeavours; one of the most exciting is "ArtGardenArt".
The "ArtGardenArt" Project
Public spaces now provide a juncture for dialogue between landscape architects and artists. This is a relatively recent development. Artists create site-specific works and landscape architects have begun to cease regarding gardens and parks from a purely functional perspective. Aesthetics have become more and more of an issue and the line between the disciplines blurs.
