The Inhabitants of Images. Lecture-performance.
In this three-part 'non-academic lecture', Rabih Mroue' delivers a text analyzing different instances of the manipulation of images for political ends in Lebanon. The work's point of departure is an image of a poster that Mroue' saw in Beirut, featuring an (otherwise impossible) meeting between former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri (born 1944, died 2005) and former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser (born 1918, died 1970). The artist then takes us through a series of images of commemorative posters of martyrs and sets off a flow of speculations about the fabrication of political mythologies, masterfully mixing fact with fiction. Artist Rabih Mroue' presents the lecture-performance, The Inhabitants of Images (2009) to mark both the receiving of the 2011 Prince Claus Award and the release of the artist's first comprehensive publication, 'Rabih Mroue': A BAK Critical Reader in Artists' Practice'.
