'LANDSCAPE'
JO BARRETT graduated from Bath Spa University College in 2000. Clapham
Art Gallery is pleased to present her with her second one-person show,
building on the profile gained for her debut show in 2002, 'Still Life'.
For this body of work Barrett has continued her concern with realizing
traditional art historical genres within a contemporary framework. Here
Barrett has built a substantial body of photo-realist paintings on the
theme of the modern landscape, both rural and industrial.
Based on photographs taken from a moving car or train, Barrett begins
with a transitional moment within a non-specific location, a non-place.
The artist is not concerned with the actual physical locality but rather
with an experience of an unidentified landscape through which we happen
to pass on our way from our starting point to destination. Added to
this, signifiers are commonly obscured or blurred due to the initial
photographs being taken with a slow shutter speed from within the moving
vehicle. Therefore, each painting represents a specific place rendered
as generic, a place where in our modern times we do not interact but
merely pass through. Fences, bushes and road barriers further enforce
the fleeting moment, acting as a point of demarcation between us and the
landscape.
Despite this objectification of the British landscape, it is difficult
not to approximate the locations due to a familiarity that we might feel
with a certain stretch of motorway or the lie of a particular landform.
But we can only approximate and it is this uncertain familiarity that
endears us to specific paintings. They are seductive and expertly
rendered, in effect giving us a view of a sublime beauty that is
fleeting but still and familiar yet ambiguous.
