The Substation presents a new solo dance-performance by one of our Associate Artists, Elizabeth de Roza.
About Landscapes
A body. Within a landscape. The landscape is context. The body does not
exist without its landscape, without its context. But the body moves. In and
out of context. From one landscape to another. In this solo-dance
presentation, Elizabeth de Roza will demonstrate the dynamics of this
movement, as well as the relationship between the body with its various
landscapes, using a newfound physical vocabulary and aesthetic departing
from her past solo work. This presentation will prepare her for a one-week
workshop in Wales that is part of the Summer Shift School at the Centre for
Performance Research, as well as a three-week workshop by Philip Zarilli
from the University of Exeter, a world-renowned teacher of kalari payattu
for theatre performers.
About Elizabeth de Roza
Elizabeth De Roza is an Associate Artist of The Substation, who specialises
in a movement-based performance style, inspired by philosophical and
reflective writings. Trained in circus skills, yoga, and in the ancient
South Indian martial arts kalari payattu, she also has a Bachelor of Arts
from Murdoch University with a double major in Theatre/Drama and
Communications Studies. Her past solo performances include Suria in 2001,
and Innocence in 2002. In May 2002, she was a Resident Artist at Burnley
Youth Theatre for the Kawan project at the Commonwealth Games Spirit of
Friendship festival. She has acted with Asia in Theatre Research Centre and
The Necessary Stage, and acted as a facilitator with Buds Youth Theatre,
based at The Substation.
About Kalari Payattu
Kalari Payattu is one of the world's oldest combat systems found in the
world today. This art requires a complete mastery over body and mind.
Believed to be started by the great sage Parasurama, after reclaiming the
land of Kerala from the Ocean, Kalari was taught to warriors to protect
and maintain the peace of the land. Kalari later on, went on to become the
main arsenal of the chieftains of the state. Great emphasis is stressed on
the condition of the physique and the warriors undergo a lot of training and
treatments to maintain it.
De Roza has the rare gift of stage presence, the ability to radiate
conviction through the eyes, and of drawing the audience in with an
unflinching confidence. She dances with a powerful sense of purpose that we
hope never wanes.
