comunicato stampa

In the context of the artistic Summer event Ete' + Expos (a contemporary plastic arts event started in some public locations throughtout the City of Mons launched in the Summer 2002), City Sonics draws a sound itinerary in the urban & historical space of Mons (Cultural capital of the French Community of Belgium).
Around 20 installations mixing sounds, words, music in a personal, funny, prospective, intriguing, poetic,?way will take place in the very center of the City of the Mons. With City Sonics the City of Mons and its partners hope to gather a large audience.

'Sound Art' is a relatively recent tendency in the arts, a hybrid genre at the cross point of plastic arts and music. For some years now, important museums and festivals have organized sound art events such as Sonic Process in 2002 in MACBA (Barcelona) and then Pompidou Centre (Paris), WAV with sound installations along the canals of the historical City of Brugge for the Brugge 2002 manifestation, or the seminal Sonic Boom curated by David Toop at the Hayward Gallery (London) during the Summer 2000). But so far very few sound installations have been gathered in outdoor public locations. City Sonics propose to fill this gap and to open various passages, gardens, courtyards, churches, rooms,?in the center of the charming, historical and beautiful city, Mons.

Until now, such a public sound event as City Sonics has not been organized in Belgium. Several entrances are proposed for this artistic sound itinerary starting from the train station to the Mundaneum via the Grand Place and the Garden of the Mayor, the 15th century gothic Church 'Collegiale Sainte-Waudru' also involving cultural locations such as the Carre' des Arts (where the Cultural Centre Le Manege.Mons is now located) or La Machine a' Eau for various performances.
Belgian, European and North-American artists are invited to install during this Summer 2003 their site specific creations and soundscapes in those central venues with more than twenty installations mixing sounds, words, musics in an inventive, intriguing, poetic and artistic way.

A series of performances involving some of the artists participating in City Sonics and special guests will be freely proposed to the public for the opening on June 28 & during the event, inviting the visitors to discover the sonic itinerary.

A CD compilation with excerpts of the sounds & music produced for City Sonics by the involved artists will be released.

At Le Mundaneum, a free sonic webspace (selections of musical, artistic and audio creative web sites) is open for the visitors.

City Sonics is curated by Philippe Franck (artistic director of Transcultures and director of Festival Netd@ys Wallonie-Bruxelles for the European Commission)

4 approaches axes combining the prospective, poetic, entertaining and contemporary dimensions:

The music-sound: electronic waves, sonic fluxes,? 'contemporary' music in the space, building a sound space and a different sort of listening.
The voice-sound: words, daily stories captured and retreated by the artists in a poetic, anthropological or funny way.
The image-sound: plastic or visual artists coming to the sculpture of sounds
The machine-sound: an original, 'dada', surrealist instrumentarium... artists being both inventors, players & producers of sounds and sound objects, in either a low tech way or using multimedia/interactive devices.
