From the Nude Portrait through to the Political Activist. Autonomous and Heteronomous Body Presentation of Women in Egypt
What about today's image of Egyptian women? How do social values and ideas corresponding with the women's live embody themselves? How about the influence of Egypt's recent changes in power on the image of women? Communication designer Fred Meier-Menzel will draw a multi facetted body-image of the female Egyptian and will take tangible case studies from the fine arts, fashion design, politics, society, university education, work world and the private sphere. Her long-time work experiences as a 'Professor of Drawing' at the German University in Cairo in Egypt altered her artistic eye on women, women's skin and women's body strongly, so that she created a research topic out of it, that it is now her PhD-project at the Bauhaus University in Weimar since October 2010. From 2006 to 2011, Fred Meier-Menzel worked as Head of the Drawing Department at the German University in Cairo in Egypt. She was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts were she taught Image Language and Nature Studies and supervised Bachelor Students in the field of Communication Design. During her stay in Cairo Fred has been working with esteemed institutions such as the Goethe-Institute and Townhouse gallery to organize exhibitions such as the "fashion and identity" show (2008). In 2010 Fred Meier-Menzel initiated her PhD-studies at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. Her field of interest includes body studies for designers as reflected by gesture, language and movement. Meier-Menzel currently supervises a series of inter-cultural workshops in Germany and Egypt.
