The show
German Art Now, on view October 18, 2003 through January 11, 2004,
features more than 40 paintings, sculptures, and photographs from the
Saint Louis Art Museum’s renowned collection of 20th-century German art.
The exhibition evaluates the innovation, expansiveness, and international
impact of German art produced during the second half of the 20th century.
German Art Now introduces 14 major works recently acquired by the Museum
as well as 5 works on long-term loan, all of which further substantiate
the Museum’s collection of 20th-century German art as one of the largest
and most comprehensive in the world. The artists represented in German Art
Now are Georg Baselitz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Andreas
Gursky, Candida Höfer, Jörg Immendorff, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lüpertz, A.
R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff, and Thomas Struth.
German Art Now and related programming are supported by the German
pharmaceuticals and chemicals group ALTANA AG as part of their cultural
engagement worldwide.
The symposium has been made possible by a generous gift from the Mr. and
Mrs. E. Desmond Lee and Family Endowment Fund.
