The new Low-Residency Master of Fine Arts is a three-year program shaped around you a contemporary artist, art educator, writer, or scholar.
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's new Low-Residency Master of Fine Arts (Low-Res MFA) is a three-year program shaped around you—a contemporary artist, art educator, writer, or scholar who has a flexible, fluid practice that is not specific to any one medium, method, or environment.
Aligned with SAIC's nationally ranked graduate fine arts program, the Low-Res MFA provides students with a unique educational experience unlike any other program of its kind. Each year of study is devoted to a specific fundamental category: Attention, Sensation, and Perception. The overarching curricular focus of the program concerns contemporary debates around Poetics and Visual Arts.
The program moves you across various teaching platforms in order to immerse you in the world of thinking and making:
– Supported by faculty based at SAIC, you will spend spring and fall semesters working remotely in your home studio, paired with an SAIC alumni advisor in your geographic area.
– Throughout the year, a rotating core of SAIC faculty continuously delivers on-campus and online curricula through a range of methods, including individual and group critiques, one-on-one studio advising, art history and philosophy seminars, technical labs, discussion groups, online forums, and thesis composition tutorials, as well as pedagogical and professional development workshops.
– Three six-week immersive summer residencies at SAIC's urban Chicago campus allow you to work closely with a core of SAIC faculty along with a rotating roster of renowned visiting artists, writers, critics, curators, and historians.
