The Skin of My Teeth
Project Gallery:
BILL ROWE
Opening Reception: Friday October 24, 6-9pm
The body, and more specifically the organism, becomes a system for reflection, the lens through which Anna Pedersen approaches her work. She creates a microcosm of pseudo-organic forms based on an organization of internal organs, cells, tissues and tendons. The end conveys an emotive contradiction - extracting simultaneous feelings of recognition on a physical level coupled with a slight degree of repulsion and departure.
Pedersen's enamel on mylar and graphite works reference topographies of organic structures with a palette and style that tend towards the pop. The hanging sculptures explore the notion of a human/animal/plant hybrid in a sexually ambiguous way.
Anna Pedersen has been in several group shows including "Liminal" at Hampden Gallery, Umass Amherst; "Sculpture: A Matter of Soft and Hard" at Artists Alliance Inc., New York; and "Some (Are) Painting" at John Gibson Gallery, New York. This marks her first solo exhibition.
The Project Gallery will have new work by Bill Rowe. Rowe's neon pieces reflect observations during extensive travels on his motorcycle. The riding and driving, in conjunction with the roadside sights, ordinary people and places, and city landscapes, provide the artist with most of his ideas. Quick shops, bars and truck stops provide comfort - Rowe states, "When your day ride is approaching 700 miles, the bike is running real good but your ass is sore and your insides are shaking, about the best thing I can imagine seeing is a flashing neon 'Open' sign." Each sign has a story realized from his journeys and catalogued in his memory.
Currently a Professor of Art at Arkansas State University, Rowe has exhibited in many venues including the Museum of Modern Art of Fort Worth, the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, and Union Quartair: Contemporary Art Initiatives in The Hague, Netherlands. This is his first solo show in New York.
