BERLIN.- Last year, Berlin Art Week, a joint effort of renowned institutions of contemporary art along with the two art fairs abc art berlin contemporary and PREVIEW BERLIN ART FAIR already thrilled an audience of art experts from around the world and Berliners. This year, from 17–22 September 2013, Berlin Art Week will once again present the variety, creativity, and quality of art in Berlin, this time with an even more comprehensive programme.

Berlin Art Week is made possible by the Senate Administration for Economics, Technology, and Research and the Senate Chancellery: Cultural Affairs and is supported by Deutsche Bank.

Berlin Art Week 2013 will be a must on this fall’s international art calendar with its exciting programme of top notch exhibitions, openings, and special events at the participating institutions Akademie der Künste, Berlinische Galerie, C/O Berlin, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), and neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK).

A highlight of Berlin Art Week 2013 is Painting Forever!, a joint effort of Berlinische Galerie, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, and Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Initiated by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Senate Chancellery-Cultural Affairs, this will be the first ever joint exhibition among the four institutions. Participating artists include: Franz Ackermann (Berlinische Galerie), Martin Eder, Michael Kunze, Anselm Reyle, and Thomas Scheibitz (Neue Nationalgalerie), and Antje Majewski, Jeanne Mammen, Katrin Plavčak and Giovanna Sarti (Deutsche Bank KunstHalle). KW Institute for Contemporary Art will present over 70 works by prominent and still unknown Berlin painters.

Akademie der Künste will award the Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis 2013 to the artist Eran Schaerf, opening his exhibition Disorder of Appearance. For the open-air exhibition OSTKREUZ. To the West, C/O Berlin has invited photographers from the agency Ostkreuz to explore Charlottenburg, the new home of the exhibition space. With numerous installations and films, After Year Zero. Geographies of Collaboration at Haus der Kulturen der Welt places a focus on the interweaving of European and African history in the process of decolonization after 1945. Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) presents in cooperation with TANAS. Raum für zeitgenössische türkische Kunst the exhibition project The Unanswered Question. İskele 2. For the exhibition Self Made Urbanism Rome, neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK) has invited ten artists from around the world to explore life in the Campagna Romana.

The innovative, artist-based format abc art berlin contemporary presents around 120 individual positions of contemporary art at Station-Berlin. Upcoming and established galleries from around the world will be showing primarily new work. In its sixth year, abc art berlin contemporary has further expanded its programme: with a range of performative and time-based works and a lively program of performances, artist conversations, musical contributions, and actions that will take place across the entire grounds of the fair. The programme will also be complemented by the project Upcoming Exhibitions: Shanaynay, Paris has invited 14 project spaces from around the world to each hold an exhibition for a two hour period. The fair also includes Miss Read, the international book fair for art publications.

With 77 participating galleries from five continents, PREVIEW BERLIN ART FAIR will once again provide an overview of the most innovative positions in art around the world and a highly varied insight into Berlin’s galleries and art producers. For its ninth year now, the fair will this year be held at Opernwerkstätten, Zinnowitzer Straße, a previously undiscovered location in the middle of the city now transformed into a vibrant showplace for contemporary art.

New this year: a highly qualified expert jury consisting of the artist Monica Bonvicini, art journalist Claudia Wahjudi, and Kasper König, the former long-term director of Cologne’s Museum Ludwig, selected ten project partners that will enrich the official programme of the 11 initiative partners with additional important sites of contemporary art. The programme of Berlin Art Week 2013 will also include the art film festival DOKU.ARTS – Second Hand Cinema, the municipal galleries Galerie M and Kunstverein Tiergarten | Galerie Nord, self-run project spaces after the butcher, AUTOCENTER, and Schinkel Pavillon, the art school initiatives Kleine Humboldt Galerie and Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, the women artists project Goldrausch, and the artist in residence program ZK/U –Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik. This programme also expands the geographic radius of Berlin Art Week beyond Kreuzberg, Mitte, and Tiergarten to Moabit, Weißensee, Marzahn, Lichtenberg, and Neukölln.

Berlin Art Week 2013 also includes the awarding of the Preis der Nationalgalerie fur junge Kunst and the closing event of the award for artistic project spaces and initiatives in the realm of visual art, organized by the Network of Berlin Independent Project Spaces and Initiatives, and initiated by State Secretary André Schmitz and the Senate Chancellery—Cultural Affairs.

Berlin Art Week kicks off the opening of the joint project Painting Forever! with an open air celebration on 17 September 2013 starting at 7 pm on Auguststraße, Berlin-Mitte. All are invited to join us in celebrating the start of Berlin Art Week 2013 with an exciting evening program of live acts and DJ sets on the main stage and further offerings of the local galleries, institutions, bars and restaurants.

The Berlin Art Week-Ticket this year is available in two versions: as a 6 day ticket for 30 euros, reduced 22 euros, it offers once only access to all institutions from 17–22 September 2013. The 2-day ticket at a price of 20 euros (reduced 15 euros), enables once only access to all institutions on two subsequent days. Tickets are now available at ticket counters of the participating institutions, Berlin Tourist Information centres at Brandenburger Tor, Neues Kranzler Eck, and Fernsehturm or online at www.berlinartweek.de
