comunicato stampa

VIPER Basel is the major Swiss film, video and new media festival. It runs from 21 to 25 November, and will once again offer an exciting and forward-looking creativity forum.

The festival has been tracking down currently relevant questions and contemporary artistic trends for over 20 years now. In 2003, VIPER Basel is also offering much more, both conceptually and within the structure of the event.

The festival catalogue and programme will be published in three languages (G/E/F).

The [plug.in] Forum for New Media, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, the Schifflände 5 building by the middle bridge and the Gare du Nord | Bahnhof für Neue Musik are other VIPER venues and meeting-places.

The venues represent the typical VIPER mix of film art and new technologies, cinema, museum and live events, performative and discursive analysis. As an innovation platform VIPER sees itself as a catalyst and impulse generator, bringing authors and producers together in Basel and linking research, the art business and mass media, culture and industry.

The key VIPER Basel 2003 programme events are the international film, video and new media competition and the annual new theme for VIPER's screenings, project presentations and installations, lectures and workshops.

ready made custom made
This year's VIPER motto is ready made custom made, so the festival is focusing on culture and media economy questions. Interesting approaches and positions will open up scope for action through new media and technology, based on a sense of technology's increasing impact on everyday experience. With an eye on the tendency towards world-wide standardization of available commodities and possible life-styles, VIPER Basel 2003 is taking a look at the field of tension between looking at things and using them, between authorship and interaction, between ready-made fields for action and custom-made options, and investigating the new ways in which consumers, authors, artists and the public see themselves.

VIPER Basel | Competition 2003
Three internationally staffed committees chose 144 works for entry to the competition from more than 1300 applications submitted. The jury will meet during the festival, and prizewinners in the 3 categories will be announced on Sunday 23 November. The SWISS AWARD will also be presented to the best Swiss work in any category. Each of the four prizes is worth 10,000 Swiss francs.

List of nominations for 2003
_________

The IMAGINATION category includes works/projects on all aspects of traditional and future forms of the moving image: (experimental) films and videos, 2D and 3D animations or multiple-screen arrangements.

The PROCESSING category singles out live works/projects that stimulate individual or collective action and use situative or processual arrangements to superimpose (computer-generated) pictorial worlds on (human) experience.

Finally the TRANSPOSITION category includes works/projects using technologically defined networks in an original, creative and experimental way, opening up or exploring networked action and communication areas.

Young Digital Freestyle
The VIPER Basel Competition 2003's little sister, the young digital freestyle competition, will be held again - after a successful launch in 2002. The winning works will be presented as part of the festival, and there will also be a supporting programme open to all young festival visitors.

workshop - staging dynamic interferences
The international workshop aims to develop dramatic concepts by means of an interdisciplinary and provisional network. staging dynamic interferences looks at contemporary performative art practices. The participants will develop performance strategies to be built up in a collaborative virtual working environment using low bandwidth wireless technologies on the basis of real-time digital processes. Prototype scenarios creating interferences between the real and the virtual stage using a complex digital data-flow and analogue interventions will be submitted and implemented.
