The rise of internet streaming, podcasts, and online platforms, seems to have informed a
remarkable resurgence in the interest of radio for artists. The Radio Calling weekend event
explores in a mini-symposium, masterclasses, and live radio performances, radio as a tool,
platform, and medium for contemporary art.
Including: Koen Taselaar, Jay Tan, Jeremy Evans, Remco Torenbosch, Jonas Lund, Sarah Tripp,
performance artist Peter Fengler, artist and radio producer Ernst Markus Stein, curator Huib
Haye van der Werf, program maker Catherine van Campen, and philosopher Marc
Schuilenburg.
Radio Calling
Radio Calling explores radio and the internet as disembodied performance spaces. How can the
medium contribute to the production and perception of a work of art?
Friday begins with an afternoon symposium on current radio projects in art. Curator Huib Haye
van der Werf talks about the 'The Voice of West' internet project, which functions as web-radio
archive for the mapping of local socio-cultural changes. Artist Ernst Markus Stein introduces DIY
Church, an open internet radio project designed as an online sculpture. Philosopher Marc
Schuilenburg gives a lecture on sound that materializes in space. The afternoon symposium will
be moderated by Catherine van Campen, program maker for Dutch broadcaster VPRO's De
Avonden.
The afternoon concludes with the premiere of artist Jeremy Evans’s (London) radio adaptation
of his performance on the impact of the Internet on the persistence of myths and the way we
tell stories. Evans shall be in Rotterdam at the invitation of TENT and Camden Arts Centre
London. On Saturday afternoon, Peter Fengler (performer and artistic director of DE PLAYER)
gives a masterclass on 'making a radio performance'. Sunday's live radio performances,
presented and recorded in front of an audience, include Jonas Lund, Koen Taselaar and Remco
Torenbosch and proposals selected through the open call. The weekend ends with a radio
performance from Camden Arts Centre in London by the Rotterdam artist Jay Tan.
The mini-symposium and radio performances will be streamed live on the art blog This Is
Tomorrow and can also be heard at TENT and Camden Arts Centre.
Radio Residencies
Radio Calling launches Radio Residencies, a new long-term partnership between TENT and
Camden Arts Centre in London. Artists are invited to produce a new performance work in which
the possibilities of live performance and radio broadcast are examined. The London artist
Jeremy Evans and the Rotterdam artist Jay Tan are the first artists participating in this residency
project.
