comunicato stampa

Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to present works by Sheila Hicks on view at the gallery from March 6 through April 5, 2014.
Over the course of a career that spans five decades, Hicks has distinguished herself as one of the preeminent and most innovative artists working in the woven form. With textiles as her chosen medium, she has consistently sought to expand the boundaries of the art form to create distinctive work that belongs as much to art history as it does to modernist design and architecture. The gallery will exhibit both large-scale wall installations as well as a group of minimes - framed miniature weavings made on a small portable loom that have been a part of Hicks’s practice for over 50 years.

Born in Hastings, Nebraska in 1934, Sheila Hicks has lived and worked in Paris since 1964. She earned both her BFA and MFA degrees from Yale University where she studied under the tutelage of the likes of Josef Albers and George Kubler. Hicks’s work has been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. A major retrospective of her work, Sheila Hicks: 50 Years, was organized by the Addison Gallery, Andover, MA where it premiered in 2010. The exhibition traveled to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia and the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC.

Hicks’s work will be included in this year’s Whitney Biennial on view from March 7 through May 25. Her work is currently included in the 1st International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Cartagena de Indias through April 7 and the group exhibition L’Almanach 14 at Le Consortium in Dijon, France through June 1. Her building intervention on the Palais de Tokyo in Paris will open in April.
