In his work as a maker of images, Clément Cogitore moves among different approaches, including video, installations and photography. His work closely mingles features borrowed from reality and fiction without any clear dividing line between the two. Cogitore uses the resulting permeability to create responses of uncertainty, expectancy or tension in images exerting a powerful fascination on the viewer. Borrowing as much from the most exalted religious iconography as from the spate of images discharged by contemporary media, challenging our intellect and disrupting our ability to analyse – is the image before us "staged", or not? – his works acquire a "disturbing" quality; and yet they have their charm, testifying to the artist's avowed quest for beauty, or even grace.
Among the subjects of works in the exhibition, halfway between epiphanies and tales of fantasy: a group of Anonymous activists, communing around a camp fire after a demonstration, the survivors of a catastrophe wrapped up in survival blankets and gathered around a recumbent form, a cave becoming a setting for scientific experiments or supernatural events, images from a mobile telephone revealing Julian Assange swept up in trance-like gyrations. Several have been specially created for the exhibition (Élégies, La Caverne, Déposition). In them, Cogitore seems to be pushing still further his fascination with encounters between the human and the unsayable, whether in sacred or in supernatural guise.

The new exhibition format at the MAMCS

Several spaces for presenting temporary exhibitions are available in Strasbourg's Modern and Contemporary Art Museum – the main exhibition room, the Photography and Graphic Arts rooms, etc. For contemporary art, a new facility is being offered to visitors. Works by "invited artists" will now come to them as a bonus, occupying wholly or partly a room in the contemporary circuit. In presenting a selection of these artists' recent works or, depending on the configuration, a display of works chosen from the MAMCS collection, this new lightweight itinerant format acts as a reminder that, while always being "work in progress", today's art too has its place in the museum.

Exhibition organised by Museums of Strasbourg with the support of the National Foundation of Graphic and Plastic Arts of the Villa Medici French Academy in Rome, and in partnership with the CEAAC (European Centre for Contemporary Artistic Actions), which will be holding the exhibition "Clément Cogitore Visions" from 14 March to 13 April 2014.

Clément Cogitore will be the subject of a "focus"
event at the "Contemporary Art Weekend" organised by the Alsace contemporary art network, Versant Est, on 15 and 16 March 2014
