Collective show

Gaya Fusion Art Space, Bali

Gaya Gallery, the leading contemporary art space in Bali, presents a collective exhibition that will be joined by 10 artists both local and international artists. They are Filippo Sciascia (Italian), Pablo Gentile (American), Peter Dittmar (Germany), Wolfgang (Austria), Alfi (Indonesian), Murni (Indonesian), Made Wianta (Indonesian), Wayan Karja (Indonesian), Stephan Spicher (Switzerland) and also Wellman (Australian). Those ten artists will collaborate and merge together to carry on one goal that is awakening public to what we call art education through the concept of the artworks. The exhibition will be opened on March 5th 2004 at 6 pm located at Gaya Fusion of Senses, Jl. Raya Sayan Ubud Bali. It runs until March 31st 2004.

Gaya prefers to exhibit artwork, which has concept behind it. The main idea of this collective show is to help people in understanding artwork. The show goes as follows that artists will display two until three of their best artworks and the concept (written) will be displayed just besides the painting. This will be a new atmosphere in the exhibition world by combining the concept and the artwork. In addition, this combination (artwork and concept) will result in a deep physiological meaning that could be gained by the viewers. Why? Since the concept will help the viewers in understanding the basic idea of an artwork. When the public has gained a better understanding), it will be resulted in higher appreciation toward the art itself.

PROFILE OF THE ARTISTS

Filippo Sciascia
This Italian painter was born in Palma Di Montechiaro, Italy in 1972. He has conducting some exhibitions both solo and collective in Italy and in Bali as well. He has been living in Ubud for couple years and revisits painting with the implementation of high tech tools as a way to see, looking into the "how the eye sees" and subsequently transferring the images to the brain. He begins with a video, "looking for the real, translated digitally in a photo image", filtered through the classic media of oil painting, in what could be described as the transposition of a video realistic image into a painted image.

Peter Dittmar
Dittmar was born in 1945 in Munich Germany. In 1959 – 1983 he studied at the Academy of Fine Art, Munich and became an art teacher there in 1968 –1982. He started to live in Bali in 1982. in 1994, he became an Art teacher at the Academy of Fine Art (IKJ), Jakarta. During the year of 1977 – 2002, he conducted some exhibitions throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Brazil, Hong-Kong, Australia, Singapore and Indonesia. The spare and abstract paintings that German artist Peter Dittmar has produced over the last decade – graphite lines of black and grey through fields of almost solid color – are as unchanging as icons. With Zen-like simplicity, his compositions rely on harmony and context to convey an aesthetic, while textures provide the surprise. His work is as contradictory as Bali, his adopted home: at once static and spirited, meditative yet exciting or reflective but mutable.

Made Wianta
This artist was born in Apuan Tabanan in December 20 1949. Born into Hindu family and married to an influential Javanese Muslim lady, Wianta has learned that religion can create conflicts and he therefore prefers philosophy. During several trips to Europe, he absorbed the lessons of surrealism. He actually developed his own version of surrealism, which truly reflects his own psyche, and mixed imaginary visions with ethnic preoccupations. Basically his works can be divided into some periods namely Karangasem Period (1978 – 1984), The Dot Period (1985 – 1990), The Quadrangle Period (1987 – 1990), The Triangle Period (1988 – 1994) and The Mixed Period (1995 – 1999). At this show, Wianta, he seems focus on the geometrical compositions characterized by dominants triangles, representations of the cosmological order in Hindu religion. Decorative icons and sub icons derived from temple or ceremonial patterns are juxtaposed with the triangles resulting in very full composition.

Murni
She is a self-taught artist who was born in Tabanan at May 21st 1966. Her works are mainly inspired by the story of her life, especially her marriage that did not go smoothly. Having no children for years, her husband asked her permission to remarry and Murni could not accept it. She asked for a divorce instead. After that, problem of marriage seems to be the central theme of her works, about male and female, about reproductive organs, to be exact, about genitals. The body becomes the representation of her biography. She explores the body into her fantasy and linking various objects such as mattresses, mats, dining table, hat, shoes, etc. Her works are not about fantasized images for the male gaze of for woman's narcissistic identification. They all come from Murni's personal memories.

Wayan Karja
He was born in Panestanan Kaja, Ubud, Bali in 1965. His interest in art began at young age and by the time he was 10 years old, he was already doing oil paintings. While studying art history at Udayana University, he was influenced by Western art techniques and his work took a major change in direction and started incorporating elements of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism into his work. From 1997 – 1999 Karja spent 2 years in the US. There he developed a new style, culminating in his series of paintings ‘Pengider Bhuwana: The Colors of Life'. He sees his work as collaboration between Balinese and Western cultures, forming a bridge between two different worlds. Once he was also suffering from culture shock and missing Bali. He found it is impossible to paint about Bali, and it was too far away, and though he wanted to make paintings about America but he was not familiar yet with the culture. At this point he was in transition, caught between two cultures. Then he began to paint into abstract style.

Pablo Gentile
Pablo was born in New York City in December 1951. He studied art history, theatrical design and painting 3 dimensional at University of New York (1971). He traveled extensively in Europe, Middle East, India, Tibet, China, Nepal, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, South America, Africa and Australia. Moving to Bali in 1980, Pablo found the space where he could digest all of those years on the road and develop his style as an artist. The most profound influence for him is the abundance of tribal and primitive art that still seems to be all over the place. His sculptures and assemblages, seen in the context of 21st century sculptural forms carries a subtext that speaks of, sometimes haunting, universal truth, lying beyond the obvious and merely decorative.

Alfi
He was born in Lintau, West Sumatra on July 19th 1973. He studied art at Fine Art School (SMSR) Yogyakarta and graduated at 1993. Then he continued to the Faculty of fine Art and Design of Indonesia Art Institute, still in Yogyakarta (1999). Together with his friends such as Yunizar, M. Irfan, rudi Mantofani, Yusra Martunus and Handiwirman, he established Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela, literally translated as The Window Visual Art Group. With abundance of themes and style, his paintings appear very compelling and varied which reflects the artist's astounding creativity. He is also blessed with amplitude of artistic touch. The color he uses can be brilliant or dark and also melancholy. But one can always notice the naïve, childlike, and lively characters in all his canvases, as the artist himself is, by nature cheerful. In 1998, he won the best painting award from the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta.

Wolfgang
He was born in Munich, Germany in 1954. For almost 5 years starting at 1973 until 1978, he studied at Renaissance painting technique with Prof. Ernst Fuchs (Viena) and Salvador Dali (Cadaques). During the the year of 1974 until 1993, he conducted exhibitions in Europe, Asia and also Australia. He also conducted a research on the concepts of architectural structures.

Andrew Wellman
This painter was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1966. Starting from 1986, he traveled around the globe. As he excited by visual images thus his camera was always clicking. Finally he settled in Ubud in 1998 to work and learn with established artist and commenced painting, giving up being just a voyeur in galleries. Andrew works in a variety of mediums such as pop acrylics, dirty charcoals, rich oils and also print.
