Early Drawings

Exhibition of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich

The early drawings of Albert Marquet (1875-1947) include nudes, landscapes and portraits from the Fauve period, as well as figurative cabaret, café and street settings – in short, glimpses of the Parisian scene at the beginning of the 20th century.

Supplemented through several drawings by Henri Matisse, the show documents the close friendship of the two artists, their collaborative works and their reciprocal influence.

The exhibition – the first monographic show devoted to Albert Marquet's drawings – brings together approximately 70 works from numerous top European collections.

The exhibition seeks to recall the inspired early 20th century drawer who was a student of Gustave Moreau and one of the co-founders of Fauvism; an artist not only admired by his companion and close friend, Henri Matisse, but also by many others.

By means of reduced line, Albert Marquet drew motifs that are, through their subtlety and precision, reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy. In this manner he concurrently captured glimpses through his direct observation of the modern life of the times. In his best works Marquet was able to strike a balance between the two divergent poles of drawing and form: that point where form gives a drawing life but can, at any given moment, just as quickly disappear again.

Recently, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung was able to acquire an undated portfolio with twenty lithographs of nudes entitled 'Académie des Dames', which perfectly correspond stylistically to the drawings of nudes done up until 1912 and that will also be exhibited. An absolute highlight of the show are the very erotic graphic works dealing with the theme of Sapphic love, which will be reproduced in the catalogue as a whole for the first time – works that reveal the 'drawer' Marquet at the height of his talent. On the occasion of the 40th commemorative anniversary of the city partnership between Bordeaux, Marquet's birthplace, and Munich, the Musée des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux has, as the principal lender, loaned the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung over two dozen very fragile works for the exhibition in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

A catalogue with ca. 90 pages, 70 reproductions and two introductory essays from Michael Semff and Angela Maria Opel will accompany the exhibition.
