Many artists have been exploring the significance and effectiveness of traditional symbols of dignity and authenticity within a modern context. Works informed by such classic symbolism seem to project a timeless confidence or comfort in these uncertain times. Throughout time, strict systems of propaganda have been used to create a sense of identity and authenticity, displaying a formal commitment or position during tumultuous times. Are these artists just visually mirroring the psyche of our society as paralyzed by growing nationalism and cultural insulation? Or is it just a pompous “display of importance,” with no meaning at all, but in fact, just another aesthetic motif to re-appropriate?

Using the concepts of “Heraldry” and “Pomp” as road maps for further explorations of these questions, Repellent Magazine embarked upon the project. We’ve called together a diverse group of international artists, offering the pages of our magazine as a platform for interpretation, and a definitive compendium of aesthetic perspectives and critical opinions. Accompanying essays have been commissioned to address the social and political implications of the theme.
