A Bharatanatyam Recital
Among the numerous dance styles practised in India, Bharatanatyam is one of the most major and the most perfect; its teaching has been passed down from master to pupil for over two thousand years. It embodies the Indian concept of worshipping and celebrating the infinite and eternal Universe through the beauty of the physical body. In times gone by this dance was performed exclusively in the temples by the 'Devadasi', while in current times Bharatanatyam has virtually left places of worship in preference for the stage. It is now practised by both male and female dancers throughout India and continues to be performed as an act of devotion for, to cite the ancient texts, 'no prayer, no offering is as pleasing to God as dance'.
