For the 100th Anniversary of Otto Tschumi
02. July 2004 - 26. September 2004
The Surrealist artist Otto Tschumi (1904-1985) has made a major contribution to 20th Century Swiss art. His main theme 'besides animals and ships' is the human body, which he metamorphoses by playing with light and shadows, and by using unusual perspectives. Tschumi felt a strong affinity with the independence of spirit called forth by the authors of the Surrealist Manifesto. Without ever committing himself to any artistic movement, he strived to render the distortion of reality through playful means. Indeed, according to Tschumi, „it is important to be obstinate, yet without getting bored. And above all, one must have fantasy.“
Thanks to the bequest the artist has made to the Museum of Fine Arts, Berne, and to the works from his succession, this exhibition will offer a vast overview of the fantastic world of Otto Tschumi.

Albert Schnyder 1898-1989
At the Crossroads
02. July 2004 - 26. September 2004
This exhibition is the first major retrospective dedicated to Albert Schnyder, an artist known as the „painter of the Jura“. This overview highlights how in the tension between avant-garde and tradition which characterizes Swiss art in the first half of the 20th Century, Albert Schnyder occupies a position „at the crossroads“ between both. At the beginning of his career, Albert Schnyder is inspired by Primitivism and Cubism, but unfortunately, he has destroyed most of the works created before 1935. Up to the 1940s, he developed a mainly figurative pictorial style, ultimately centred on the subject.
The exhibition not only shows a significant selection of paintings, lithographs and drawings, but also documents Schnyder’s relationships with the artists’ group BBZ8 as well as with artists Félix Vallotton, Paul Klee, Juan Gris and Marcel Gromaire, and collectors like Walter Hadorn, Hermann Rupf and Othmar Huber.
