James Turrell: Infinite Light

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art SMoCA, Scottsdale

'This is not minimalism and it is not conceptual work; it is perceptual work', says James Turrell. For more than three decades, Turrell has manipulated the properties of light and human perception by creating installations which isolate light giving it form, depth and mass.

'This is not minimalism and it is not conceptual work; it is perceptual work', says James Turrell. For more than three decades, Turrell has manipulated the properties of light and human perception by creating installations which isolate light giving it form, depth and mass.

SMoCA celebrates the completion of the first phase of the Roden Crater Project with a comprehensive presentation by internationally-acclaimed artist, James Turrell. Since the 1970s, the artist's attention has been consumed by the Roden Crater Project. Located in Northern Arizona, the crater is a mammoth extension of Turrell's perceptually-based artworks. Roden Crater is a volcanic crater which has been reshaped and modified to create 'celestial vaulting', a phenomenon in which the eye sees the sky as a dome rather than a flat expanse causing viewers to feel as though they are standing on the edge of the earth. Designed as a celestial observatory, Roden Crater will include a series of tunnels and chambers that provide viewing opportunities for significant celestial events.

The exhibition includes an overview of the Roden Crater Project, tracing its conceptual development and structural changes; seven of Turrell's room-size light works in which forms seem to float in air and spaces gradually fill with mysterious light; a selection of Turrell's perceptually-based gallery works from the 1970s and 1980s; and a new permanent outdoor sculpture from his Skyspace series.

This exhibition has been made possible in part by a generous grant from the Flinn Foundation.

The exhibition is organized by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by Robert E. Knight, Director and Debra L. Hopkins, Curator of Exhibitions.
