The Neighborhood as a work of art

OMNIART is a large-scale Urban Intervention taking place for the first time ever Friday, December 3rd from 9 PM to 2 AM on NE 13th Street adjacent to the Performing Arts Center during Art Basel Miami Beach 2004 to celebrate the OMNI area as the head of Miami's Cultural Corridor. The theme of The Neighborhood as a Work of Art will encompass a series of curated museum-style warehouse spaces featuring hot new artists, vacant lots transformed into sculpture and performance sites, and the street itself transformed into a dramatic setting for cutting edge art. The host organizations are the MIART Foundation and FIU (Florida International University) Department of Art and Art History, with the participation of the University of Miami Art Department. The event is funded by a grant from the City of Miami s CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency), the city s principal organization of community redevelopment, which has prioritized promoting the Omni Area as The New Important Cultural Venue in Miami. The dynamic interaction between name artists, important emerging artists and Miami s Art Education Institutions proposes to lay the foundation for an arts community in one of the most significant Urban Arts Redevelopment Sites in the US. Some of the major artists exhibiting are Kaarina Kaikkonen of Finland, Tania Bruguera of Cuba Carlos Betancourt, Edouard Duval-Carrie and Tina Spiro of Miami, McArthur Genius Grant recipient Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle and recent Whitney Biennial alumni Anne Wilson.

OMNIART is an outgrowth of Paint the Town, a large-scale urban intervention by Tina Spiro and Urban Planner Eran Spiro funded by the CRA to transform the Omni area into a series of interesting shapes and colors. The Spiro's previously co-produced the highly acclaimed Amigos exhibition during Art Basel Miami Beach 2002.

Corporate Sponsors include Intrepid Real Estate Company, The Pawn Shop, Miami Realty Acquisitions, American Gift Corp, Merrill Lynch Private Client Group, Salomon, Kanner, Damian and Rodriguez, PA, Gibraltar Bank, Kleinfeld Law Firm and Urbana Magazine whose special edition dedicated to this event is an immediate collectors item.

The Miart Foundation is a not-for-profit Art Education Program / Atelier, functioning as a Fellowship Program for 10 to 12 highly qualified artists per year. It will offer seminars open to the public along with advanced artistic skills training, professional courses, studio space and gallery exposure, acting as an incubator and facilitator in the transition from the studio /academic life to a career as a professional artist. The Miart Foundation also proposes to provide a downtown satellite venue for the Art and Art History Department of Florida International University.
