The exhibition is focuses on seven new large-format paintings and a selection of works from the 1980s. Monochrome paintings are based upon pictorial montages, developed on the basis of black-and-white photo copies, that put motifs from various contexts into an only seemingly homogeneous new context.

From May 5 to July 17, 2005, Württembergischer Kunstverein is presenting the solo exhibition of the US-American painter Mark Tansey conceived by Museum Kurhaus Kleve. This is the first comprehensive exhibition in Germany dedicated to the artist who caused an international stir at the documenta 8 in 1987.
The exhibition focuses on seven new large-format paintings created between 2002 and 2005. In addition it features a selection of works from the 1980s, including the monumental painting „Mont Sainte-Victoire“ (1987) and a version of „Triumph of the New York School“ (1984).
Since the late 1970s, Tansey has taken a highly unusual standpoint as a painter. His rebus-like pictorial stories, that are founded on the traditions of modern art history and the discourses of the French structuralists, engage in an irresolvable – indeed, in view of their aesthetically fascinating realism, cunning – game revolving around the postponement of meaning. Interlaced with a host of contradictory references, Tansey is constantly undermining the process of deciphering.
His monochrome paintings are based upon pictorial montages, developed on the basis of black-and-white photo copies, that put motifs from various contexts into an only seemingly homogeneous new context. Alongside the paintings, the exhibitions presents numerous of these sketches, not yet presented to the public, that provide a telling insight into Tansey's artistic practice.
