A Celebration of Light and Poetry.

Part of the City of Cambridge's yearlong millennial celebration.

Cambridge has been sparkling throughout the millennial year with community celebrations, a quarterly calendar highlighting two thousand things to do in Cambridge in two thousand, and grand light installations to illuminate each season. As the year 2000 draws to a close, the Cambridge Arts Council is pleased to present light artist group Spectaire, noted Cambridge poet Peter Payack, and the Cambridge Public Libraries in a dynamic collaborative celebration of light and poetry.

Illuminated Word is the last in a series of four seasonal light projects by Spectaire, collectively called Common Light, for Cambridge's yearlong celebration as the "city of light." On December 7, an airplane will circle the night sky, aglow with a changing digital display of Star Poems written by local poets and children on light and sky. On the ground, poetry will be projected onto the facades of the Boudreau, Central Square, Main, O'Neill, and Valente library branches while colored theater lights will illuminate the O'Connell and Collins libraries. Powerful beams from WWII searchlights and skytrackers, located at all library branches, will intertwine above the City to create a constellation, uniting the library network and diverse neighborhoods.

Outrageous and festively zany masked creatures from Behind the Mask Theatre will greet audience at all library branches. The delightful cast of characters includes a giant talking iguana, mystical bear and river spirits, a towering wolf-headed deity, and a topsy-turvy Salvador Dali. Behind the Mask Theatre has been a favorite in Cambridge's millennial festivities, engaging spectators at busy intersections in March for Curious Doings in Cambridge Crosswalks, and along Massachusetts Avenue during the May Light Parade.

As part of Illuminated Word, all seven library branches invite families to participate in special literary events and activities. Below is a partial list of library events:

Spectaire artists Matt Belge, Lowry Burgess, Richard Harrington, and Jeff Mauzy have gained individual honors and awards for large scale light installations in the US and Europe for a quarter of a century. Cambridge's millennium light celebration unites their talents for the first time for a unique collaboration.

For Common Light, Spectaire combined the technology of 300 million candlepower spinning skytrackers and 800 million candlepower World War II carbon arc searchlights in four spectacular events. In January, Spectaire presented The Beaconing, accompanied by the ringing of church bells. In May, the City celebrated the spring with a Light Parade of drummers, masked performers and lights parading down a three-mile stretch of Massachusetts Avenue. In September, Spectaire presented a grand finale to Danehy Park Family Day, uniting light and music for Skyward Light.

All events are free and open to the public. For a complete schedule of Illuminated Word programming, visit our web-site.
