Genevieve Cadieux

The Americas Society, New York

Born in 1956, Cadieux lives and works in Montreal. During the 1990s, Cadieux created a compelling body of photographic works whose subjects are nature, the human body, and relationships between the sexes. She presents each disparate subject in a similar format and with an equally intense emotional tenor, suggesting equivalencies and interrelationships among them.

comunicato stampa

Born in 1956, Cadieux lives and works in Montreal. During the 1990s, Cadieux created a compelling body of photographic works whose subjects are nature, the human body, and relationships between the sexes. She presents each disparate subject in a similar format and with an equally intense emotional tenor, suggesting equivalencies and interrelationships among them.

Their large scale, sparseness, and often tight, close-up framing give them an emotional weight seemingly out of proportion to what is actually depicted. Geneviève Cadieux will feature several photographs and one sculptural work: "Souffle," 1996, a triptych of delicate blown-glass globes. "Geneviève Cadieux" was organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver. It has also traveled to the Art Gallery of Hamilton in Ontario.

This exhibition was organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver.

Programs:
On Friday, January 26, at 6:30 p.m., Geneviève Cadieux will lead a tour of the exhibition and discuss her work with Bruce W. Ferguson, Dean of the School of the Arts at Columbia University.
On Wednesday, February 7, at 6:30 p.m., the panel discussion "Contemporary Art in Canada," will look at art-making in Canada's urban centers. Moderated by Americas Society curator Joseph R. Wolin, the panelists include Barbara Fischer, Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto at Missasauga; Daina Augaitis, Vancouver Art Gallery; Stéphane Aquin, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; and Lee-Ann Martin, MacKenzie Art Gallery, University of Regina. These programs received support from the Canadian Consulate General, New York and the Québec Government House, New York.
