Cartiographic translation in sound experienced by Russian Hydrofoil

Map to Sine is a two-part project by South-African artist James Beckett (1977) as part of the international exhibition of contemporary art ADAM, produced by SMART Project Space. “Map to Sine” is a series of translations from image (cartographic) to sound, based on much of the fascination and formal study of the German Serialist musicians. Exercise such as the rotation of musical pattern, the arbitrary expansion of spacing and the imposition of shape applied directly from nature all formed part of their practice.

With the generous support of the transport company Connexxion, Beckett will host passengers to a live translation of surrounding information of the North Sea Canal, aboard a Russian Hydrofoil - a water rocket of eighties design. The Bulgarian performance artist Zhana Invanova (1977) offers a live explanation of the system in both Russian an English for the benefit of an educational composition.

SMART Project Space reopens to the public on the 3rd September 2005. Having purchased the building of the former Pathological Anatomical Laboratories on the Wilhelmina Hospital area in the Old West of Amsterdam, SMART Project Space appointed Peter Sas Architects to transform the 4000m2 building into 700m2 exhibition spaces, 5 cinemas, 12 studios, 2 project rooms, a media-lab and production studio, café/restaurant and a members club. Having relocating to its 3rd building, the itinerant years are over and SMART Project Space is here to stay.

To celebrate this event SMART Project Space launches ADAM - an international exhibition of contemporary art, committed to the development and realization of 30 new projects that engage with the situational context of everyday life. All the artists have been commissioned to appropriate and re-interpret the socio-political conditions of Amsterdam, questioning cultural and social identity at a given place and at a particular moment in time. Taking the lively and dynamic infrastructure of the city as a starting point, attention is drawn to the specificity of the local context and the expression of a multi-faceted city, filled with a wealth of cultures, languages and social confrontations. ADAM is an examination of cultural space, addressing issues of location and habitation, questioning ideas about where we live and how we live, taking perspectives which are emotional, cultural and symbolic. ADAM reflects the moment and takes as its point of departure the dynamics of art-as-activity, whereby modes of action lead to new ways of understanding aspects of contemporary artistic production in both the public and private space. ADAM harbors the idea of trans-nationality on a local level, taking into account the very specific history of Amsterdam as a city. Ignacy Sachs observed that “cities are like people, they belong to the urban species but they have their unique personality”. It is this uniqueness which is conceived; mirroring shared cultural, psychological and spatial structures and reflecting the wider social and political conditions both locally and globally.
