Art Practices in the Public Domain

inSite is a network of contemporary art programs and commissioned projects that maps the channels of permeability and obstruction that characterize the liminal border zone of San Diego-Tijuana.

inSite_05/ Art Practices in the Public Domain opened the weekend of August 26, 2005 with a bold schedule of activities that reflected inSite_05’s four key components — Interventions, Scenarios, Conversations, and Museum Exhibition — including urban interventions, online actions, live performance-based events, a two-city museum exhibition, a mobile archive, and dialogues and symposia.

inSite_05/ Special Event Weekend III/ October 20 - 23

During four key weekends of public programming —August 26-28; September 22-25; October 21-23; November 11-13—, inSite_05 will highlight two years of process–based work in San Diego-Tijuana. Projects commissioned for inSite_05 have been inserted in the social weave of the region at various levels of (in)visibility. Their physical manifestation during the public phase of presentation is in all instances driven by intricate artistic practices focused on co-participation and the utopian impulse to initiate collaborative networks.

inSite_05 is not based on a traditional biennial model. Artists’ projects have developed as processes of collaboration and engagement in the region with varying levels of visibility. Many of the projects cannot be “viewed” on a conventional tour. A system of shuttles has been conceived to facilitate independent movement between scheduled events on both sides of the border, but will not visit all inSite_05 locations. Please note that various Interventions projects are located at sites in San Diego and Tijuana for the duration of the public phase of inSite_05. Please check the Special Event Weekend II Calendar/Map for hours of operation of each site. This printed Calendar/Map will be available begining Monday, September 19 at the San Diego and Tijuana infoSites and on the Visitors page of the inSite_05 website (http://www.inSite05.org).

inSite is pleased to announce the program for Special Event Weekend III, the second of four Special Event Weekends planned for inSite_05.

Since its inception in 1992, inSite has focused on stimulating artistic practices that have explored and challenged our understanding of the terms ‘public,’ ‘urban,’ and ‘border.’ Unfolding over the course of two years, inSite_05’s interdisciplinary platform incorporates four core components — Interventions, Scenarios, Conversations and Museum Exhibition. inSite_05 will have a concentrated phase of public presentation between August 26 and November 13 2005.
