This Is How We Do

In the exhibition 'This Is How We Do' Susi Jirkuff presents an installation comprised of a combination of animation on video, drawings and the video of the same title.
In the animated video, which is based on portrait drawings, place and/or time interact to curious or even banal effect. The animations address cultural irritations, false assumptions by so-called 'others', subjective truths and the breaches that arise unexpectedly when different sets of givens collide.

The location, its treatment in the media, the identity that can be created on the basis of a location and one's own appropriation of the familiar or the unfamiliar are behind Susi Jirkuff's work. By collecting images from newspapers, magazines or television she has amassed a repertoire of stories that she mixes with her own or combines to create subjective narratives. The process of appropriation occurs via the drawings, which provide something like a movement into the image, looking around in a strange space.

Video animation is a medium that allows this approach to be taken a stage further, the videos themselves also operating independently as work. So, too, the archetypical visual languages of different genres flow into the animations. The filtering out of stereotypical sequences of images, themselves producing a generally legible language, serves as a wrench with which to split the images and the contents that they transport.
