DeChiara|Stewart is pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition of Thomas Eller. Eller's works are compelling by their extraordinary presence. They radiate a heightened sense of immediacy, in the same time defying one's sense of space and time by the unique way they are presented to the viewer. The work consists of photographed objects and people, mounted on aluminum, that are re-sized (either greatly enlarged or shrunk) and cut to the contour of the object. Each work usually includes several such images, mounted together on aluminum bracing, creating a three dimensional, sculptural effect.

Eller frequently juxtaposes large and small images, creating a complex visual experience, as the viewer is perpetually forced to forge a new perspective on the relationships between either various objects or parts of a single object, which often, because of his approach to mounting the photos, appear to be part of a sequence.

In the current exhibition, Eller presents works grouped around the theme of love, both as a physical event but also as an elevated state of awareness, fraught with clarity and elation. So a woman, slowly removing her top, as seen in a set of mounted panels that literally animate the event, becomes a celebration of heightened feeling, when our sense of self surrenders, we give in to the moment and exist only now. Ellerís use of sculptural photography allows for a complexity of readings that each medium on its own would not permit.

Born in Germany, Thomas Eller lives and works in New York. A fellow at the Villa Romana in Florence, Italy in 2000, he has exhibited widely in Europe and Asia. Also last year he participated in the Echigo-Tsumari Triennial in Japan, and presented his work in collective exhibitions at Kunsthalle N¸rnberg, Kunsthalle D¸sseldorf, Nuova Icona in Venice, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, Poland. He recently had solo exhibitions at the Kitchen Gallery in Seoul; the Galerie Holtmann in Cologne; and the Antonella Nicola Gallery in Torino.
