Towards an end to conveyor-belt funerals. Curated by Andree Cooke. Todays funerals are a Victorian invention, or at least poor vestiges of past style. The Victorians invented the coffin, the hearse, the black clothes, granite memorials, burials gowns and drapes. We unquestioningly go on.... 1996.
The exhibition DEAD is a bridge between Welfare State International and leading
artists and designers from both the UK and abroad.
Celebrating over ten years of creating and inspiring alternative funerals,
Welfare State International have with the projects curator AndrÈe Cooke
commissioned a score of international artists, fashion and product designers to
produce functional objects for future funerals.
Since 1968 Welfare State International have been exploring through performance
and site specific work, a culture which is less material, focusing on where
people actively participate and gain the power to celebrate moments that are
wonderful and significant in their lives - weddings, naming children and burying
the DEAD.
Like WSI the artists selected were inspired by their experiences to produce
something positive, celebratory and new. All exhibits have generously been
donated by the artists to WSI and are to be auctioned to raise funds for an
annual artists bursary with WSI thus creating a legacy for the Year of the
Artist.
Artists exhibiting in DEAD include:
Tord Boontje, Christine Borland, Hussein Chalayan, Duncan Copley, Milena
Dopitova, Rose Finn-Kelcey, Peter Friedl, Owen Gaster, Inventory, Edward Lipski,
Michael Marriot, Jessica Ogden, Simon Periton, Fiona Raby and Anthony Dunne,
George Shaw, Ross Sinclair, Bob and Roberta Smith, Linder Sterling, Padraig
Timoney, Gavin Turk and Lawrence Weiner.
DEAD will feature funeral objects which are both celebratory and practical. Some
exhibit's are hi-tec such as Dunne and Rabys G.P.S (Global Positioning System)
lead memorial box which will only open in one coded and designated place on the
planet. Many are made of inexpensive materials such as Lawrence Weiners linen
body bag, with stenciled aluminum text ONE DEAD ONE on its front.
