Showcase for New Art by Living Artists.

New York City, October 12, 2005 Fair management proudly announces that the 2006 Selection Committee has chosen 153 galleries from 38 cities around the world to join us March 10-13, 2006 for The Armory Show, The International Fair of New Art. After exhibitors announced over $45 million in sales at The Armory Show 2005, more than 500 galleries applied to participate in the next fair, creating difficult choices for the Selection Committee. “Overall, galleries requested larger booths and we couldn’t include all the great galleries we wanted. If we had given every gallery the booth size they requested, the fair would have been too small and we had to address it," commented Emmanuel Perrotin, Selection Committee member. The trend for the 2006 fair follows the tighter, more exclusive international focus of preceding years.

The Armory Show is distinguished by its ability to assemble a stellar roster of primary market dealers who will present art that hasn’t been seen before. Collectors and art enthusiasts know they will see new art by the current powerhouses of the art world and discover exciting new artists. In this tradition, the eighth edition of the fair will feature a mix of blue chip contemporary galleries like White Cube/Jay Jopling (London), Zeno X (Antwerp) and David Zwirner (New York) and fresh, emerging galleries like kurimanzutto (Mexico), Anna Helwing (Los Angeles) and Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch (Berlin). Fifteen exhibitors will make their debut, including Transmission Gallery (Glasgow), Guild & Greyshkul (New York), Herald Street (London), Galerie Frank Elbaz (Paris), Darren Knight Gallery (Sydney) and Galleria Maze (Turin), among others. Notable additions include Johnen/Schottle (Cologne), The Modern Institute (Glasgow) and Patrick Painter Inc. (Los Angeles).

The 2006 Selection Committee members are Massimo De Carlo (Milan), Anton Kern (New York), Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris), Eva Presenhuber (Zurich), Stuart Shave (London) and Lisa Spellman (New York). “The Selection Committee spent more time on the process this year than ever before," said Katelijne De Backer, who has been The Armory Show Director since 1999. “Galleries requested larger booths, which indicates strong sales, and I’m pleased that we can present another outstanding showcase for new art by living artists."

The Armory Show, The International Fair of New Art, was started by four New York art dealers as The Gramercy International Contemporary Art Fair in 1994 and takes its name from the rich history of the 1913 Armory Show, which introduced European Modernism to America. The Armory Show 2006 will be held March 10-13, 2006 on Piers 90 and 92 in New York City. Clifford Chance LLP, a global law firm with offices in twenty-eight cities around the world, is the Presenting Sponsor. John Wesley has contributed twenty-two new drawings to create the visual identity of The Armory Show 2006. His work will be featured in the fair catalogue and all visual materials.
