Head On: Deutsche Bank Collection
curated by Friedhelm Hutte, Deutsche Bank Collection
Cai Guo-Qiang, born 1957 in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, is one
of the leading contemporary artists. The practice of the New York
based artist draws on a wide variety of symbols, narratives,
traditions and materials such as fengshui, Chinese medicine, and
gunpowder.
For the show at the Deutsche Guggenheim, the first solo
presentation of his work in Germany, Cai Guo-Qiang developed a
special concept that reflects the diversity of his oeuvre and
establishes a unique link to the city of Berlin.
In his space-filling installation, Head On, 99 wolves race towards
a wall to the east. While the first ones crash into it, the pack
still chases after the leader. The large-format drawing titled
Vortex also uses the motif of the wolf. Like a cyclone, thousands
of them rush across the paper in an organic unit demonstrating
energy, strength and fierce resolution. In a special performance
prior to the exhibition opening, Cai Guo-Qiang will create this
9x4-meter drawing using various sorts of gunpowder. These two
works are supplemented by the video Illusion II, the documentation
of a spectacular performance with explosives, which will be
produced prior to the show in Berlin.
Cai Guo-Qiang: Head On, Deutsche Bank Collection continues the
series of shows from the corporate collection of Deutsche Bank.
Furthermore, in 2008, Deutsche Bank will be the main sponsor of
the Cai Guo-Qiang retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum, New
York.
