Clegg & Guttmann: Social Sculptures, Community Portraits and Spontaneous Operas 1990 -2006

A selection of Clegg & Guttmann’s wide ranging public projects, produced between 1990 and 2006 will be featured in the duo's first UK solo exhibition.

The work engages with different institutions, cultural forms and ideological structures. Social Sculptures reveal the nature of art institution by comparing them with others, and studying their place in the system; Community Portraits contemplate the identity and history of particular communities; and Spontaneous Operas invite communities to present themselves through songs, dances, speeches and other forms of performative behavior. For Cornerhouse, each of the works will demonstrate a different re-contextualisation strategy, and will bear a different relation to the original project from which it was derived.

Clegg & Guttmann will create a new Spontaneous Opera entitled Manchester 1911. Commissioned by Cornerhouse, it is inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein's connections to the University of Manchester, and builds on the artists' practice of nurturing cultural and intellectual relationships between disciplines that are not always in proximity to each other.

Organised by Cornerhouse in collaboration with the Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Vienna, and supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum.
