This August, the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF) celebrates its 14th year
as the largest gay and lesbian film festival in the Southwest. aGLIFF continues its mission to exhibit
high-quality gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender films and videos that enlighten, educate, and
entertain.
The film festival and other aGLIFF events throughout the year attract national and local media
coverage. In addition to local broadcast media, aGLIFF events have garnered the attention of such
publications as The Advocate, Out Magazine, The Austin Chronicle, The Texas Triangle, The Austin
American Statesman, The Daily Texan, The Dallas Voice, The Dallas Morning News, and Texas Film
and Video News.
In its first year, the festival included only five films screened over seven evenings at a single venue at
the Dobie Theater. By 1999, the festival had grown to include 140 films and videos from 20 countries
screened over two weeks at five venues throughout the city. Last year, attendance reached a record
breaking 16,000. The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival is THE largest gay and
lesbian cultural event in Austin.
Over the past year, aGLIFF has had some wonderful and exciting new developments. First, we decided
that since we were growing so fast it was time to move into our own place. This winter aGLIFF moved
into new offices on 51st Street just east of I-35. Finally, a spacious place we can call home. Also, in
the hopes of providing future talent in the film industry and keep the festival alive, aGLIFF collaborated
with Out Youth on the Gay Youth Media (GYM) Project where we taught some youth how make
movies. After the successful and glamorous premier of the GYM Project's film, "Questioning Normal",
aGLIFF has decided to make it an ongoing part of the festival.
aGLIFF brings to the Southwest the best new films and videos by, about, or of interest to gay men and
lesbians. The filmmakers represent the most creative local, regional, national and international artists
exploring gay and lesbian themes. In most cases, aGLIFF provides the only local opportunity to see
these films.
The festival has been host to many filmmakers, directors, producers and actors, adding to the
excitement of the two-week event and giving the festival audiences a hands-on experience.
The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival 2001 will be held from August 24 to September
6th. Bigger and better than ever, aGLIFF will showcase more than 150 films and videos at venues
throughout Austin, continuing a tradition of promoting films appealing to a diverse gay and lesbian
audience.
