Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller

Institut Mathildenhohe, Darmstadt

Their works and installations are fascinating for the extraordinary use of voices, sound and music. The so far largest retrospective exhibition of the artist duo worldwide combines works from the years 1995 to 2007 - including the new installation The Killing Machine - in a vivid expose' of the artists' overall output. The presentation was organized in close collaboration with the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA).

The Killing Machine and Other Stories 1995-2007

a coproduction by
Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt and
Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona

Parallel to the Venice Biennale, documenta 12 in Kassel and the Münster sculpture projects, Institute Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt will be presenting in the summer of 2007 the work of the Canadian artistic duo Janet Cardiff (*1957) and George Bures Miller (*1960): their first major solo exhibition in Germany. Having become known to an international audience through their prize-winning participation in the 2001 Venice Biennale, Cardiff & Miller’s works and installations are fascinating for the extraordinary use of voices, sound and music.

While spatial installations like The Forty-Part Motet (2001), through the usage of a choir composition in forty parts by Thomas Tallis from the year 1573, create a place of concentration for tonal nuances of highest musical sharpness, total installations like Opera for a Small Room (2005) develop by means of acoustic and visual occurrences a narrative power which stays unparalleled.

The presentation at Institute Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, which was organized in close collaboration with the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) – the so far largest retrospective exhibition of the artist duo worldwide – combines works from the years 1995 to 2007 – including the new installation The Killing Machine – in a vivid exposé of the artists’ overall output.

Furthermore the exhibition tour provides an opportunity for the publication of an extensive catalogue which, together with a DVD of the most important works of the artists, gives a concise overview of their artistic activity and – at the same time functioning as a comprehensive reader – unites much previously non-released text- and image material as well as literary and academic parallel tracks to the oeuvre of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.
