Videos

lba Benítez Gallery opens the new Season 2007 ­ 2008 with a video show by the artist Mario García Torres (Mexico, 1975). Garcia Torres is a member of a younger generation of artists who see their work against the backdrop of the history of conceptual art and use that history in an extremely unfettered way as their starting-point. They use their works as a way of addressing, for example, social and political issues. Garcia Torres works with topics that include the way we visit museums, the role of the artist in society, and even the way art history is construed.

A Brief History of Jimmie Johnson´s Legacy, 2006. Looped, colour and around, 5 min 10 sec.
Abandoned and Forgotten Land Works That Are Not Necessarily Meant To Be Seen As Art, 2004. Black and white, no sound, 8 min.

Garcia Torres work has been seen at the 52nd Venice Biennale (Robert Storr selection). Hi has made solo shows at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam,) and the Kadist Art Foundation (Paris) and group shows at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Tate Modern of London, De Appel at Amsterdam and Artists Space in New York, among others.
