The Other Collection
An Homage to Hildy and Ernst Beyeler

10 Years of Fondation Beyeler
60 Years of Galerie Beyeler

In 2007 the Fondation Beyeler celebrates the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the museum, founded by Ernst and Hildy Beyeler on the basis of their art dealership, Galerie Beyeler. The occasion will be marked with a special exhibition, the first to be devoted to the now sixty-year history of the gallery. About 16,000 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper – not including prints and editions – passed through the premises at Bäumleingasse 9, the gallery’s location since its inception. From this overwhelming number a selection of masterworks is made, and placed in a dialogue with the museum’s collection. This “Other Collection” transforms the Fondation Beyeler into a small musée imaginaire, in which many splendid works that have long since entered major public and private collections around the world will be reunited. Many a spectacular museum acquisition, many an unforgettable exhibition would have been unthinkable without the commitment of Ernst Beyeler, whose merits also include friendly consultancy and custodianship services for some of the most significant private collections of the twentieth century, and the maintenance of extraordinary contacts throughout the art world.

Masterpieces by Braque, Bonnard, Cézanne, Dubuffet, Gauguin, Giacometti, van Gogh, Gris, Kandinsky, Klee, Léger, Miró, Mondrian, Monet, and Picasso – to name only some of the highlights – are on view. Works by such exemplary representatives in our own collection are supplemented by loans to form coherent groups and ensembles. Beyond this, the personal viewpoint and special preferences of the Beyelers are illuminated. Works they relinquished will stand beside those they permitted themselves to retain, forming an homage to a life’s work, a portrait in pictures of a brilliant art dealer to whom we owe a site of vital and inspiring encounters with fine art.

Forests of the World
The Other Commitment

A thought-provoking photographic exhibition

“Forests of the World” presents a spectacular portrait of the trees and forests of our planet in 100 mostly large-format photographs. The exhibition is not just aimed to please on a superficial level, but to jolt us and draw attention to the urgent need to protect one of the most important foundation stones of our existence. The exhibition brings together unique works from around the world whose powerful visual expressiveness reflects the highest degree of mastery in the medium of photography. Pictures by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Ernst Haas, Frans Lanting, and numerous other photographers represented in well-known international museums and collections, are included.

The other commitment

In singularly beautiful photographs of forests and landscapes, the exhibition “Forests of the World” brings home to us the need to protect our threatened natural world.
The show is being held at the Fondation Beyeler at the same time as the top-notch anniversary exhibition “The Other Collection: Homage to Hildy and Ernst Beyeler”, in which key masterpieces of modern art that passed through the Galerie Beyeler have been reunited from around the globe.
The Fondation Beyeler is virtually predestined to be the first venue for such a photographic exhibition as, for many decades, Ernst and Hildy Beyeler have demonstrated a tireless commitment to the preservation and protection of our natural environment and of our forests in particular.

Who is behind the exhibition?

The exhibition “Forests of the World” is an environmental and cultural project of the WALD-KLIMA-UMWELT foundation, the Bank Sarasin & Cie AG and private benefactors, in cooperation with the Fondation Beyeler.

Thanks are also due to Greenpeace International and WWF International for their additional support.
