Singolare/Plurale - Identita' e percezioni

a cura di Laura Serani

---------------------english below

---------------------english

This festival was created in 1992 by the Commune of Savignano sul Rubicone and the cultural association “Circolo Fotografico Cultura e Immagine” under the direction of Lanfranco Colombo to become an encounter and an exchange place between photographers and the passionately fond people of photography. It soon developed as an unfailing international appointment for the reading of portfolios. The various activities such as exhibitions, meetings and workshops, that are usually organised together within this manifestation, have progressively contributed to give to the Portfolio in Piazza the form of a festival, that along the years has been directed by Mario Cresci, Vittoria Ciolini and Denis Curti.

This year we have given to the Savignano Immagini Festival new objectives and a new organization, activities taking place throughout the year and a discovery and exchange dimension even more international than before.

This choice has brought to the nomination of a new Art Director of the festival, that will also be responsible of all the permanent activities linked with photography: Laura Serani, who will bring to Savignano her twenty-year old experience in the photographic field as the Director of the Galeries Photo and of the FNAC audiovisual projects for France and abroad between 1985 and 2000. Always for FNAC she has composed the remarkable Photographic Collection, an original photographic panorama made up of more than 3000 pictures, while she has also contributed through her numerous exhibitions to the diffusion of Italian photography in France and in Spain (exhibitions by Gianni Berengo Gardin, Mimmo Jodice, Ugo Mulas, Francesco Radino, Ferdinando Scianna, Gabriele Basilico...) and launched the “European Fnac of Photography Prix”.

With the new Art Direction this festival has renewed itself taking the new name of Si Fest and a programme that is much more oriented towards the international scene and characterized by the will to affirm itself as an important moment of discoveries, reflexions and encountering. Exhibitions and conferences will take place together with videos and projections. The readings of the portfolios have remained the heart of the festival in order to try to respond appropriately to the photographers’ and readers’ expectations.

Director Laura Serani has therefore selected some authors that deal with the delicate theme of identity: what kind and how many identities can exist? And so the identity, meant in a general way between reality and perception, goes through different historical and contemporary proposals, beginning with Robert Frank’s exhibition The Americans, exceptionally exposed for the first time in Italy thanks to the willingness of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie of Paris on the occasion of the 50th anniversary from the publication of the book in America where it had caused a great sensation. As a matter of fact, Frank, who is unanimously considered as one of the fathers of photography, had brought a revolution in the way of taking pictures and in the way on how to consider photography. At the same time he represented a real breaking point from the images of the United States that until then had been proposed. The country coming out from Frank’s pictures did no longer reflect the American Dream that until than had been diffused. So, for the first time, the national identity, or at least the image of it, had begun to be discussed.

Beside Robert Frank’s America we will expose Philip Jones Griffiths England though the exhibition Middle Years, which was presented for the first time in London during the last month of June at the Trolley Gallery during Photo London. Philip Jones Griffiths, already famous for his denouncing pictures on the war in Vietnam, will present in Savignano an interesting work on the 60s and 70s years in Britain, marked by deep social and political changes. In Middle Years Griffiths concentrates on a reality which is much nearer to him and emphasizing the forms of the domestic revolution which become the symbol and the powerful manifestation, immediately understandable, of the big transformations taking place and speak to the spectator much more than many political manifestos.

One other exceptional event is the presence of Malick Sidibé, back from the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennial Exhibition of this year, who exhibits the unpublished portraits of the young people of Mali. Sidibé ‘s pictures can be read in layers: on the surface a very relaxed and serene atmosphere, but if you go down into the depths you’ll find, in the images depicting the young people of Mali, their longing to be like the white people of the same age and their difficulty in adapting themselves to city life as well as their search for their own identity.

On the occasion of the festival the author has been invited in order to recreate his famous Studio Sidibé and to launch a photographic census of the population of Savignano, that will be developed in the future in order to become a regular appointment of the Si Fest. For the lucky ones who will manage to be photographed by him it will be a unique occasion to be depicted with the vivacity and the irony that characterize Sidibé ‘s style. All the others will have the consolation to see one of the greatest contemporary photographers at work.
And on the deepest identity reflect also the women authors of the collective exhibition Femmes d’Images by Michket Krifa for CULTURESFRANCE: ten Arabian women photographers and video artists that leave the clichés and the ideological clashes turning back to the debate on intimacy offering their own view on their private and artistic world.

Also the other exhibitions of this year are on the theme of identity: Giandomenico Marini through Generations tells us a piece of history of the twentieth century with the images of his family, Patrizia Zelano with Lights of Islamism, a work on immigrated women, dwells upon the complexity of the elements connected to integration. And also the works by Bourcart and Nefzger for the Jeu de Paume Prize, Massimo Siragusa – awarded by the G.R.I.N. for his work on the modern temples of idleness and amusement, Maurizio Cogliandro with his Rage and Andrea Dapueto with Rooms with a view, Pesaresi Prizes 2006, and Claudio Gobbi with Persistence, an extraordinary work on the identity of the places deprived from the human presence.

On 14th September, which will be the opening day of the festival and also the birthday of Michel Butor, this author will present the exhibition of Marie-Jo Butor enriched by his precious calligraphic descriptions, in collaboration with the Tito Balestra Foundation of Longiano; the day after, Saturday 15th, Gabriele Basilico will present for the first time, trough a projection, his recent and unpublished work on San Francisco.
Not less interesting are the projections of the Contacts series, at the presence of Jean-Pierre Krief, produced by KS VISIONS, ARTE France Jeu de Paume, with the participation of the Ministry of Culture and Communications, of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques and of the Centre National de la Photographie.

This 16th edition of the Si Fest attempts therefore a deep reflection on the multiple aspects of identity, a meditation which becomes fundamental during periods of great changes and transitions. But this reflection is also on the role and the artistic identity of the photographer, who, since ever and in a more and more meaningful way, documents, underlines and emphasizes, through his own sensibility and his polyvalent photographic tool, the world around and inside him.
