Bernhard Leitner

Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin

SoundSpaceSculpture (1968-1973). The exhibition pursues the question of who invented the so-called Klangskulptur, the sound sculpture. In the late 1960s, Austrian architect and artist Bernhard Leitner designed the first sound-space sculpture in New York, which remained unrealised, however, due to insurmountable technical challenges. On show: early sketches, notes, models and photographs.

comunicato stampa

The exhibition pursues the question of who invented the so-called Klangskulptur, the sound sculpture. In the late 1960s, Austrian architect and artist Bernhard Leitner designed the first sound-space sculpture in New York, which remained unrealised, however, due to insurmountable technical challenges. This work was inspired by Leitner’s interest in architectural spaces, in classical and modern music, in modern dance and in the new technical equipment emerging as media in the art of the 20th century.

The exhibition shows the early sketches, notes, models and photographs in which Leitner first developed his idea of the sound-space sculpture. The central focus of the the exhibition, however, presented in the White Cube, is the re-recording of the first sound-space explorations of 1971 to 1973. This is not a reconstruction of historic events, but rather a space-sound sculpture re-realised with the help of modern technology - the first of its kind in the history of art.
