comunicato stampa

Western Project is proud to present new paintings by Southern California artist and writer, Eve Wood. This body of work is called No Other Word For Love, a series of portraits of both friends, and relatives. Her images are culled from photographs and transformed into arresting psychological studies. Most akin to Alice Neel, Wood reveals a fragility and humanness in her figures – but most of all strength.

And titles such as Self Portrait As Derelict Irish Boy and Every Good Boy Has A Cherry In It point to a romanticism that is new to the work. Moreover, each painting brims with an organic fluidity – be it foliage or brick; Nature feels omnipresent, undulating and emphatic. Known for her narrative style, Wood uses organic elements to accentuate the subject’s persona; enormous masses of flowers, dripping branches and oozing walls. It is the sense of endurance and intensity that is the crux of these images – an awareness of vitality, inseparable and robust.

Wood has previously exhibited at Suzanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Black Dragon Society, Angles Gallery, Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina and numerous other institutions across the US. She is an accomplished writer on art and culture and has published numerous books of original poetry.
