We are pleased to present this group show for a number of reasons. Firstly, although for many this is a beginning, for all of us it marks the end of the first uneraseable year of the new millennium. Secondly, it is as unexpected as many things lately. Last and not least, we are still alive and well and would like to celebrate the fact that we were able to spend this time among art, artists and art-lovers. Therefore, wishing in a better and a more open future we have asked to eleven artists, whom we have shared experiences with, to share together an "extra large propitiatory work" for this group exhibition.
Et les jeux sont fait.
In order: the Italian artist Giovanni Rizzoli has sent from Venice the wall to wall carpeting of our previous gallery, at 191 Chrystie Street, stained with the blue liquid of his performance "Shower Painting". The New York photographer Barbara Pollack who just had her solo show here, gave us a series of portraits of young known novelists such as Rick Moody, Eileen Myles, Jeffrey Eugenides, Sebastian Junger among others, commissioned last year by the New York Public Library. Jeannette Louie will mount for the first time a wall piece called Rampart consisting of wooden shelves and photographic paper to form the rampart of a castle. New Yorker Curtis Mitchell has placed a sink that he broke by throwing it from the window of his studio and then has repaired with red sox. The Italian Gianni Piacentino, early included in the Arte Povera group and then "released", has sent us an astonishing 14 feet prototype vehicle from 1971. Mexican-Canadian--Chicago-based Dianna Frid shows an embroidered fabric representing the nude structure of a skyscraper. Nzingah Muhammad shows a photographic selfportrait addressing her muslim faith taken in her kitchen in Brooklyn. Italian Enrico Iuliano, has 1/2 For Rent, a queen-size "boarder-bed" divided in the middle by a piece of glass, with an intermittent light that writes "for rent". English artist New York-based Nicolas Rule will show a painting from his Cuban Series, that lists the names of the Cuban revolutionaries and James Drake from Santa Fe has sent a large photograph, part of a body of work dedicated to the hand and body language of prisoners inmates and their families. In the basement Italian artist (from Novara), New York-based Carlo Ferraris will project his Trailers made purposely for the occasion.
Opening from Saturday, December 1st from 11 a.m to 6 p.m.
Hours: Tuesday thru Saturday, 11 am - 6 pm
(please note that the gallery will be closed from Dec 25 thru Jan 7)
