Excavation chic
curated by Hans Joerg Hafner
magnus muller is pleased to announce its second solo exhibition of works by
Sabine Gross. Under the title “excavation chic”, evoking a fashion label,
the artist will present new images and sculptures, dealing with the status
of the artwork in the era of its unlimited quotability.
Behind the perfectly shaped surfaces of the works, which recall design
objects, centuries-old, essential questions of esthetic discourse are
hidden. With a good deal of irony Gross considers popular dichotomies, such
as original/fake, archetype/copy, consistent/transient,
authentic/artificial, old/new, valuation/degradation and 2D/3D sub specie
aeternitatis, i.e. bearing eternity in mind.
Thus, iconic forms of recent art history such as Duchamps’ “Fountain” or a
floor installation by Carl Andre come to appear as the magma of extinct
volcanos of artistic discourse. The punchline, however, being that at close
view the same works prove to be an improbable, but successful rebirth of the
visual arts out of the spirit of entropy. Art is dead. Long live art!
After numerous solo shows and her participation in big overview exhibitions,
such as “Magie der Zahl”, Deep Storage”, “Ich ist etwas Anderes”, “The Big
Nothing”, “ein/räumen” and the 10th Triennial of sculpture, “Bodycheck”, in
Fellbach last year, Sabine Gross received the Dorothea-von-Erxleben-grant
for a two years teaching assignment for sculpture at the Academy of Visual
Arts in Brunswick in 2007. Amongst her group exhibitions in 2008 are:
“Supernatural”, Kunsthalle Andratx, Mallorca; “Inkonstruktion III”, Art
Biesenthal; and “50 years documenta – archive in motion” in the Kumu Art
Museum in Tallinn. Furthermore, Sabine Gross will be showing works in the
special exhibition at Art Forum Berlin “Difference, What Difference?”
