The International Film Festival Rotterdam offers a quality selection of worldwide independent, innovative and experimental cinema and visual arts. Devoted to offering a platform to and actively supporting independent filmmaking from around the globe, The International Film Festival Rotterdam is the essential hub for discovering film talent and for catching the early buzz on many world and international premieres.
During twelve festival days, hundreds of filmmakers and other artists present their work to a large and devoted audience in 24 screening venues located within central Rotterdam. Up to 3,000 press and film industry representatives visit the festival to report on its buzz or to take part in CineMart, the largest co-production market for film projects.
Festival Programme
Every year the festival presents a diverse array of both competitive and non-competitive sections, installations, performances, special presentations, debates and talk shows. The 2008 festival included more than 200 features, both fiction and documentary, plus some 400 short films. The festival is proud to place an emphasis on work of high cultural and artistic value, presenting a rich programme to an appreciative audience. Read more...
CineMart
CineMart was the first platform of its kind to offer filmmakers the opportunity to launch their ideas to the international film industry and to find the right connections to get their projects financed. Launching around 40 new projects that are looking for additional financing, CineMart also signals an important start to the 'film year'. Every year, the CineMart invites a select number of directors and/or producers to present their film projects to potential co-producers, bankers, funds, sales agents, distributors, TV stations and other potential financiers and information sources. It offers highly productive opportunities to network and discuss projects. In order to maintain the effective but informal atmosphere which is one of the main trademarks of CineMart, the selection of projects is kept to approximately 40 and the invitation process is selective. Hubert Bals Fund
The Hubert Bals Fund is designed to bring remarkable, socially relevant and important feature films and feature-length creative documentaries by innovative and talented filmmakers from developing countries closer to completion. The HBF provides grants that often turn out to play a crucial role in enabling these filmmakers to realize their projects. Since the Fund started in 1988, more than 700 projects from independent filmmakers in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America have received support. Approximately 80% of these projects have been realised or are currently in production. Every year, the IFFR screens completed films supported by the Fund. Read more...
Professionals / Facilities
All the professional and press services are concentrated in the congress centre de Doelen, located within easy walking distance from all festival venues and hotels. In 2008 the festival welcomed 3,000 professional guests, including 400 filmmakers, 500 journalists and 1,500 producers, distributors, sales agents, buyers and programmers. The CineMart and Film Office orchestrated around 7,500 meetings and the festival sent detailed attendance lists of almost 300 press & industry screenings and viewing reports of over 500 films in the video library to rights holders. The Sales Club further enhances the professional networking experience for buyers and sellers in a comfortable and informal environment. Read more...
Audience
The festival is one of the biggest cultural events in The Netherlands, and thanks to its large, cinephile audience, one of the best attended film events in the world. Within a compact setting of up to 37 different venues (film theatres, museums, art galleries, industry locations), 27 screens and 1200 public screenings, it registered 367,000 admissions in 2008.
Education

These programmes include the Young Trainee Project for aspiring film journalists, The Rotterdam Lab for young producers, as well as courses for Dutch school children.
