A collective experiment that brings together staged images of everyday life by 124 photographers from Namibia that undermine the usual view of the most German of all the former colonies. This project, at the interface of art and visual politics, raises the question of presentation possibilities that go beyond the familiar postcard motif, reveal the element of depiction within the depicted, and inquires into other uses of photography in the post-colonial context.
Curated by von Evelyn Annuss
How can post-colonial photography be determined? STAGINGS MADE IN NAMIBIA is a collective experiment. It brings together staged images of everyday life by 124 photographers from Namibia - which has been independent from South Africa since 1990 - that undermine the usual view of the most German of all the former colonies. This exhibition project at the interface of art and visual politics raises the question of presentation possibilities that go beyond the familiar postcard motif, that reveal the element of depiction within the depicted and inquires into other uses of photography in the post-colonial context. In cooperation with the Kunstraum Kreuzberg 200 photographs are being presented in the former chapel of the Berlin Bethanien: a heterogeneous mise en scène that continually provokes new readings through its interactions and contradictions. The exhibition will then go on show in the National Art Gallery of Namibia in Windhoek.
