Solo show
Renowned curator and art historian Adachiara Zevi, in collaboration with the Enrico Castellani Archive in Milan, is curating Enrico Castellani's exhibition at Haunch of Venison New York. Featured works will include numerous recently completed paintings in white or metallic silver, in the artist's signature style, dating from 2008 and 2009, as well as several early paintings and sculptures from the 1960s, some of which will be on loan from prominent collections including the Fondazione Prada in Milan.
As one of Italy's most celebrated living artists, Castellani is known for his poetic, constant and rigorous style, defining what art critics have called a "different repetition." Castellani, along with Yves Klein, was identified by Donald Judd as one of the most important European precursors of minimalism and conceptualism. After brief periods of an informal style followed by a series of modified canvases that bend and swell and that were inspired by the work of Lucio Fontana, Castellani arrived in 1959 at a mode of visual expression that has remained true in his style up to the present day.
Castellani creates artworks in which the canvas is not just the support or the backdrop on which a painting is created. His canvases move beyond the abstract or the figurative, often punctured with nails and other minimalistic tropes in order to create lines in light and shape, breaking the boundaries of the medium of painting.
Castellani's most notable recent exhibitions include retrospective exhibitions at The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow, Russia (2005); Kettle's Yard in Cambridge (2002); The Fondazione Prada in Milan (2001); Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea in Trento (1999); and, Palazzo Fabroni in Pistoia (1996). Castellani's last solo show in New York was at the renowned Betty Parsons Gallery in 1966.
A fully illustrated catalog will accompany this exhibition with an essay by Zevi and writings by the artist, who will travel to New York to oversee the installation of his works.
