London Linos
Clapham Art Gallery is delighted to present Paul Catherall with his
third one-person show.
Catherall has become well known for his crisp renditions of well-known
London landmarks. Inspired by commercial art from the 1930s through
to the 1960s Catherall lends an experienced history in design and
illustration to a very traditional medium. His linocuts are clean and
precise. By employing a restricted palette and unusual vantage points
Catherall emphasises the line of landmarks with which we are so
familiar. For example, Tate Modern is presented as a towering monolith
set against an electric pink background where its intimidating presence
is accentuated by extreme compositional cropping.
Added to these are a number of monochromatic works. Oxo Tower and
Battersea Power Station are rendered in rich silver-grey tones. They are
subtle but atmospheric as the weight of the buildings is emphasised by
flat tonal planes.
Overall, Catherall continues to reinforce the nature of Londons
skyline by presenting us with his distinctively archetypal images.
