I'm Sure, I Have Seen That Somewhere Before!

M21, Langenlois

Is that sentence, which one becomes to hear during every vernissage. Practically each art-recipient person tries to compare the observing work of art with something else. At last everything was seen somewhere before. That part of the world residents, that have a potential of willingness for perception of contemporary art, are waiting and are ready to respond to something, that comes in touch with something beeing seeing before.

comunicato stampa

Allusively titled "I'm sure I have seen that somewhere before!", M21 brand new art works shall create a transformative space for individual and collective reflection through idiosyncratic combination of contemporary art context and popular culture as well as self-identification. The projects will focus on the viewers position and their role in contemporary art.

One of the great successes of the project is that M21 is in a position to accommodate all artists on site. This affords the opportunity to invite participants from further a field then Lower Austria. It has been very beneficial to view the city through the eyes of those who might have never visited before.

"I'm sure I have seen that somewhere before!" is a public art project that features the first night of experimental art works and guest artists and will be on view simultaneously in different locations in the City of Langenlois: in the M21 area in Hinter Anger and other outdoor venues including formerly Weighbridge Operator's House at Holzplatz Downtown, Raiffeisen Bank Parking Lot, Waiting Hall of the railway station, plus an extra established gallery space in the shadow of the church in the city center.

Concept

"I'm sure I have seen that somewhere before!" - it is that particular sentence, which one gets to hear during really every vernissage. Practically each art-recipient person tries to compare the observed piece of art with something doesn't matter what - that she or he had seen somewhere before. The whole process of perception is always connected to the process of comparison with something famous (read: familiar), more accessible (read: understandable) and acquainted.

At last everything was seen somewhere before and everything is somehow well known. The whole idea of new does not exist in the creation of some new things, but in the new looking at this new. Running for originality, scandalous, being in a public interest through that searching of new is unrealized because something real new is not familiar for the public. That means - not understandable. That means - not very interesting. This part of the world residents, who have a potential of willingness for perception of contemporary art, are waiting and are ready to respond to something that comes in touch with something seen before. This addresses the viewer on such a profound and pre-verbal level that one discovers that one already knows everything before even she/he has seen that. The project should present the sense of some good old thing, that is well known to the bright public - but what they have forgotten or see in a wrong light.

On June 2nd, M21 wants to make every single visitor shout: "I'm sure I have seen that somewhere before!"
