The Stranger
Mayling To's new video work The Stranger investigates themes of
aspiration, violence and the search for fulfilment.
The Stranger features To's human-scale 'Panda' protagonist journeying
between suburban charity shops, captured in a search for as many panda
toys as possible. In what becomes a retail ritual, Panda buys up an
extensive stock of small-scale reflections of himself - and then returns
to his flat in order to engage in a mysterious and violent activity.
Panda's off-beat rite is ultimately made visible to the viewer, and the
results are as comic as they are disquieting.
Mayling To lives and works in London, and completed her Fine Art MA at
Goldsmiths' College in 2001. To has previously shown at Hedah,
Netherlands (2001); Site Gallery, Sheffield (2000); in Cities on the
Move, Hayward Gallery, London (1999); and in From Where To Here,
Konsthallen Göteborg, Sweden (1999).
The Stranger is a new commission for TheSpace@inIVA, and is part of the
Institute's jubilee season.
