Nicole Six & Paul Petritsch - Atlas / Christoph Buchel

comunicato stampa

Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch are strict and uncompromising in pursuit of their artistic ideas, which they realize in the form of video works, installations, and photographs, as well as temporary performative interventions. A central issue underpinning the duo’s work is the human subject’s relationship with the world as an existential experience.

Using their own bodies to locate and orient themselves in relation to space and time, they create individual cartographies, lay trails, leave traces, and inscribe themselves into places, all with the help of self-defined ordering systems. Ideal for their attempts are empty, seemingly boundless spaces that offer no points of orientation. With radical actions, they put established norms—such as conventional notions of being-in-the-world—to the test, sometimes standing them on their heads. The situations staged by Six and Petritsch are disconcerting and provocative with regard both to perceptions of space and time and to human actions.

In accordance with the mostly simple character of these artistic interventions, reduction and abstraction are key creative criteria. Repetition of a picture that seems to change only minimally or not at all, deliberate creation of gaps in the narrative, focusing on secondary locations in a plot – all these are artistic strategies to boost the imagination.

ATLAS, an exhibition conceived especially for the Secession, is the first major solo show devoted to Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch in Austria. It shows a recent intervention that approaches the concepts of space and time on opposing scales.

In contemporary with Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch's exhibition, Wiener Secession presents Christoph Büchel's solo show.
