Bertram Hasenauer. Sulur

Museum der Moderne - Rupertinum, Salzburg

The exhibition, which presents an overview of works from the years 2000 - 2010, juxtaposes 15 paintings to 15 drawings. Hasenauer's artistic interest is characterized by a sensitive view of man, of others and of his own surroundings. He concentrates on faces, eyes, the bearing of his protagonists. His works are not "real" portraits, but conceived, ideal images of human figures and other beings, who keep their identity and presence.

comunicato stampa

Curator Margit Zuckriegl

The MdM Rupertinum presents a selection of new works by Bertram Hasenauer, who was born in Saalfelden in 1970 and has been living in Berlin since 1998. The Museum der Moderne Salzburg has acquired works by Bertram Hasenauer for nearly 10 years. Portraits, landscapes and date paintings are grouped around works from the museum's own collection.

Hasenauer’s artistic interest is characterized by a sensitive view of man, of others and of his own surroundings. He concentrates on faces, eyes, the bearing of his protagonists. His works are not "real" portraits, but conceived, ideal images of human figures and other beings, who keep the secrets of their existence, their identity and presence. Bertram Hasenauer’s human figures are present and absent at the same time. They have distanced themselves from our hectic, rapidly changing world to fulfil their own mission that is unknown to the viewer. They have withdrawn into themselves, concentrate on their inner self, averted, veiled or melting with the amorphous background. They are "lost" characters: the real world of the viewer partially merges with the surreal terrain of phantasy.

Hasenauer's human beings can be mute girls or thoughtful young men, who are set in contrast to silhouette-like images of nature: intertwined branches of a tree, the night sky, silhouettes of bushes. The human images have a certain enigmatic character, comparable to an invisible aura. There is something magical and unreal about them, as if not of this world. They are somehow removed from the here and now, as suggested by the title of one of Hasenauer’s works: "You somehow slip away". The images move in an uncertain sphere, somewhere between present and absent, real and magical, sensual and extrasensory, between the disappearance of the body and the appearance of the soul. Bertram Hasenauer does not portray people or paint a specific tree, but depicts his memories of persons and things.

The exhibition at the MdM Rupertinum, which presents an overview of works from the years 2000 - 2010, juxtaposes 15 paintings to 15 drawings.

Bertram Hasenauer was awarded the Georg Eisler Prize in 2008.

A catalogue will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
