La galleria Giò Marconi è lieta di annunciare la seconda personale di Nathalie Djurberg "Snakes know it's Yoga", dove presenta i suoi lavori insieme ad Hans Berg, suo collaboratore e compositore delle musiche. La mostra si terrà negli spazi al piano terra e seminterrato della galleria dal 1 giugno al 24 luglio 2010.

In mostra 60 pupazzi - sculture, presentate in 41 box in plexiglass su piedistalli di legno, e due nuovi video, accompagnati dalla musica di Hans Berg, che puntualmente ne sottolinea e intensifica il messaggio. Le musiche sono state composte ex novo per la mostra.

Le sculture in plastilina, modellate e vestite dall'artista, ritraggono personaggi - simbolo dell'uomo mistico, con riferimenti alle religioni occidentali e orientali. E' un mondo popolato di martiri, asceti e creature fantastiche che sono alla ricerca dell' illuminazione", religiosa e spirituale: tre uomini si autoflagellano, un uomo anziano e magro pende dal ramo di un albero, un altro si trova nel mezzo di un campo di rigogliosi cactus con lunghe e affilate spine, o ne vediamo uno dissetato da una fata che sembra appena scesa dal cielo e un asceta è sdraiato su un letto di spine.

Dei box in plexiglass che ospitano le sculture, otto hanno un'armatura di neon rosa, blu, gialli, e rossi, che ne segnano il perimetro.
Le strutture verticali su cui poggiano i box, simbolizzano il viaggio catartico dei personaggi dalle tenebre fino al raggiungimento di uno stato di illuminazione spirituale, metaforicamente rappresentato dalla luce che li circonda e li investe. In uno dei video, realizzati per la mostra con la tecnica in stop motion tipica dell'artista, i protagonisti sono una donna nuda dai capelli rossi e una rana, con cui la donna interagisce. La rana ha un ruolo di primo piano nella tradizione sciamanica: leccando una rana, che secerne uno speciale veleno, lo sciamano entra in uno stato mentale psichedelico e può accedere al mondo degli spiriti.

A settembre la mostra si sposta alla Kestnergesellschaft di Hannover, in Germania, dove sarà visitabile fino al 7 novembre 2010.

Nathalie Djurberg è nata a Lysekil, Svezia, nel 1978. Vive e lavora a Berlino.
Nel 2009, Nathalie Djurberg ha partecipato alla 53rd Biennale di Venezia “Fare Mondi” (a cura di Daniel Birnbaum) dove è stata insignita del Leone d'Argento per il più promettente giovane artista.
Tra le sue prossime mostre personali figurano mostre presso il Walker Art Center di Minneapolis, il Camden Arts Centre di Londra, la Julia Stoschek Collection a Duesseldorf.

Giò Marconi Gallery is pleased to announce Nathalie Djurberg’s second solo exhibition “Snakes know it’s Yoga”, which was done together with her collaborator and composer Hans Berg. The exhibition will be held on the ground and underground floors of the gallery and will be on from June 1 until July 24, 2010.

On display in the gallery will be 60 puppet sculptures that are presented in 41 plexiglass boxes positioned on wooden plinths. Two new films which are accompanied by soundtracks of Hans Berg that are underscoring and intensifying the works are especially made for the exhibition.

The sculptures, that are all self-formed figures of plasticine and cloth are characters that derive from Western to Eastern religion and out of a mythological context:
It is a world of holy men, martyrs, ascetics and fairy tale creatures who search for spiritual and religious enlightenment: there are, for example, the three men that are flagellating themselves, there is the skinny old man dangling from the twig of a tree. Another man is positioned in the midst of a field of blooming cactuses with long and sharp thorns. Another one is given water by a fairy that seems to have stepped down right out of heaven and yet another ascetic looking man is strung to a bed of nails.

Eight of these plinths on which all the various sculptures are being shown have different neon tubes in pink, blue, yellow and red attached to the edges of their plexiglass covers. They are symbolizing the characters’ cathartic journey from the depth of the purgatory and darkness into a literally enlightened state of mind.

In one of the new videos that is realized in the typical stop motion technique Djurberg is known to work with, the main protagonists are a naked, red haired woman and a frog with whom she is interacting. The frog is holding a prominent role in the shamanic tradition: by licking frogs that secrete a venomous substance the shaman gets into a psychedelic state of mind through which he can access the spiritual world.

In September, the whole exhibition will be shown at the Kestnergesellschaft in Hannover, Germany where it will be on display until November 7th 2010.

Nathalie Djurberg was born in Lysekil, Sweden in 1978. She lives and works in Berlin.
In 2009, Nathalie Djurberg participated in the 53rd Venice Biennial “Making Worlds” (curated by Daniel Birnbaum) for which she won the Silver Lion for best Emerging Artist.
Her upcoming solo shows include exhibitions at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Camden Arts Centre, London; Julia Stoschek Collection, Duesseldorf.
